Long ago Jane Goodall showed us that humans and chimpanzees weren’t as different from each other as people then believed. She has since transcended her role as a primatologist to encourage children to become environmental and social advocates, to develop antipoverty programs in the areas around African nature preserves, and to promote environmental stewardship. Goodall, a United Nations Messenger of Peace, now travels around the world to encourage living in harmony with the natural world.
“Think what the world would be like without animals. It would collapse. Ecosystems must be healthy. By helping the animals, we’re helping the people, too.”
In October 2018, more than 30 scientists and leaders in environmental conservation from 16 countries are calling for the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award Jane Goodall with the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. The coalition argues that:
“A Nobel Peace Prize for Jane Goodall underscores that humans must not be at war with nature,” they say, “but rather that true harmony and peace is only possible when humans live sustainably on our planet.”
Will she have a chance? If Al Gore / Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) won for calling attention to Climate Change, why not? The nominations for 2019 closed the 1st of February and a shortlist will be made up by March. The candidates will then be reviewed and the final choice is made in October. An online petition has been posted on Change.org. If not this year, then maybe next year… so please keep on supporting!
